The collection of short stories “CONVERSATION WITH JULIUS” does not have a common thread linking its plots.
Each piece takes its cue from very different suggestions and inspirations: escapism in pure fantasy stories that range from a timid approach to science fiction, to the discovery of the true cavern of the Cumaean Sibyl, to journeys into the underworld in the footsteps of those thought to be true by Virgil and Dante, to venturing into popular legends. In others, the attempt to probe reality in an attempt to understand it shines through, to the point of reaching the paradox of some stories, which emphasise how even situations that appear to be only fantasy can instead become part of our everyday life.
We play with death by mixing irony with the understandable anxiety surrounding what we ignore, with Alzheimer’s and the distressing situations that this disease drags with it.
There are clear signs of an almost visceral love for Naples and its people.
References to music, to Bach, to the game of chess, could not be missing because of the strong positive influence these dimensions have on the author of the pieces.
From the lines of the stories in this anthology, in different ways and not always explicitly, should transpire a profound interest in a humanity that has always struggled between opposing poles of extreme beauty and extreme abjection and poverty of soul.
The hope is that, even if unoriginal, they will arouse emotions in the reader and not necessarily.
